Quote of the Week

An assignment due Friday mornings

Every other week there will be a new quote near the door of Room 18.   Your assignment is to write down the quote in your neatest cursive in your quote journal.  You are then to respond to the quote just below it.

What does it mean to respond to a quote?

  • Research and explain who the person was who said the important words.  Give some detail about their lives and accomplishments (Q1)
  • Write why you think the author of the words said what they did. (Q2)
  • Write what you think the quote means. (Q3)
  • Give examples of how this quote is connected to your own life.  Give at least one example.  (Q4)

Going above and beyond:

On the page adjacent to the quote and the response, you may draw a picture or something else that you feel helps to represent the words, or the feeling of the quote.

Second Week of the Assignment:

Quote books with be returned by Monday afternoon or Tuesday morning.  Quote books will be marked with deeper or clarifying questions from me.  Your response to the question is due that Friday.

Q1 Research

Research is thorough.  We have a good picture of the author of the words life and accomplishments.

The research is written in your own words.

Some research about the person, but not clear about their accomplishments.  The research is written in your own words.

Much is missing about the person or the research is NOT written in your own words.

Q2 Why?

You explain, using detail from research, why you think the author would have said or written what they did based on the author’s accomplishments.

You give an explanation that doesn’t really fit the experiences and accomplishments of the author but make a good, observable effort to.

You give an explanation, but it does not make sense to the experiences of the author.

Q3 Interpret

Explains what you think the quote means by pulling apart specific phrases and metaphors from the quote and putting them into understandable language.

Explains what the quote means.  Attempts to pull out phrases and metaphor from the quote.
